Ancient Nikopolis was a city of Epirus founded by the Romans in southwestern Epirus, near present-day Preveza. Its archaeological site is currently the largest ancient city in terms of area in Greece. Its name derives from the Greek word for "victory." The city was founded as a symbol of the great victory of Gaius Julius Caesar Octavian—later the Roman Emperor Augustus—against Mark Antony and Cleopatra VII of Egypt.
